About the Megahurts
Team #2219 was established in the fall of 2006 at Brehm Preparatory School in Carbondale, IL. It started by establishing the School’s first computer programming class. Students from that class joined a handful of others from the school to form the Megahurts. Team #2219 began with a core group of ten students and three college student mentors.
None of us really knew what we were getting into. When you first hear about FIRST it sounds simple, get some parts and build a robot to complete a task. Then they tell you that the competition changes every year and that you have SIX WEEKS from the day everyone in the world learns of the task till the team needs to ship the robot. Our team started in our Science Lab and Wood shop with only the most basic tools and a rough knowledge of robotics. Rack ‘N’ Roll was the competition our rookie year, and we made it, beating the odds. 25% of the teams that enter never make it to competition.
Brehm Preparatory School is a private, not-for-profit, coeducational boarding school for students with complex learning disabilities in grades five through twelve. The current student body represents families from 30 states and 3 countries. Brehm students come from a variety of socioeconomic backgrounds ranging from metropolitan cities to rural towns. Brehm is located on its 80-acre campus in Carbondale, Illinois. Carol Brehm who was a mother of a high school student with learning disabilities founded it in 1982. Since its inception, Brehm has been the only boarding school in the Midwest designed to meet the needs of students with specifically diagnosed learning disabilities, dyslexia, ADHD/ADD, aphasia, aspergers, nonverbal learning disorders (NLD), visual processing, dyscalculia, dysgraphia, anxiety disorder, auditory processing disorder, speed of processing disorders, and dysphasia in middle and high school programs. Brehm’’s mission is to empower students with complex learning disabilities to recognize and optimize their full potential.
Our FIRST Robotics Program and the Megahurts brings robotics and high level STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) experiences to students with learning disabilities. Allowing them to pursue carriers not typically thought of when discussing students with learning differences.
After graduating from Megahurts we have students attending schools such as; Cal Poly Tech, Carnegie Mellon, DePaul, UW Stout – in such majors as; computer science, mechanical engineering, information systems technology, electrical engineering. In all of these instances the students possessed complex learning disabilities. This program clearly shows that when students are given the right opportunity, with the right mentors, and given the right motivation they can and do succeed!
